The pictures in a PDF are stored as complete image objects, not as part of a flattened page. That means they can be taken out at their original resolution — which is usually higher than what the page shows, because a photo placed in a report is scaled down to fit, not resampled. Screenshotting the page gives you the scaled-down version; extracting gives you the original.
This tool scans every page, lists what it finds as thumbnails, and lets you take one image, a selection, or all of them as a ZIP. It handles the raster images — photographs, scans, logos saved as PNG or JPEG — which is what people are almost always after.
How it works
- Drop in a PDF.
- Look through the thumbnails of the images that were found.
- Download one, download your selection, or take them all as a ZIP.
What people use it for
- Recovering a high-resolution photograph from a brochure when the original file is gone.
- Pulling the figures out of a paper to reuse in a presentation.
- Getting a logo out of a PDF letterhead at usable quality.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. The file is opened by JavaScript and WebAssembly running inside your own browser tab. It is never uploaded, there is no server-side processing and nothing is stored — closing the tab discards everything.
- It found no images, but the page is clearly a picture.
- Two different cases. If the page is a scan, the whole page is one image and it should be found. If the graphics are vector — charts, diagrams and logos drawn with lines and curves rather than pixels — there is no image object to extract, because nothing on that page is a bitmap. Render the page instead with PDF to images.
- Why are some images bigger than they look on the page?
- Because that is their real size. A 4,000-pixel photograph placed in a 6 cm frame is still a 4,000-pixel photograph in the file; the page only displays it smaller. Getting the original is the main reason to extract rather than screenshot.
- Why do some images arrive in pieces?
- Some producers slice a large graphic into tiles when writing the PDF, so what looks like one picture is genuinely several image objects. They come out as they were stored; reassembling them means putting them side by side in an image editor.
- Am I allowed to reuse what I extract?
- That is a copyright question, not a technical one. Extraction gives you the file; it does not give you a licence. Photographs in a brochure or a paper usually belong to someone.
