Drawing a black rectangle over a name in a PDF editor hides nothing: the text is still in the file, and anyone can select it, copy it, or read it with a text extractor. Real redaction has to delete the underlying content, not cover it.

This tool removes the text and image data inside the marked areas from the page's content stream, then draws the black box. What comes out has nothing left to recover in those regions.

How it works

  1. Open the PDF and find the passages to remove.
  2. Draw rectangles over each area to redact.
  3. Apply the redaction — the underlying content is deleted, not merely covered.
  4. Download the redacted PDF and verify by trying to select the text.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is opened by JavaScript and WebAssembly running inside your own browser tab. It is never uploaded, there is no server-side processing and nothing is stored — closing the tab discards everything.
Can the redacted text be recovered?
The text and image operators inside the marked areas are removed from the content stream, so there is nothing left to select or extract there. Always verify the output before distributing it — that is good practice with any redaction tool.
I have to redact the same term on every page.
Use Redact by search — it finds every occurrence of a word or pattern across the document and redacts them all in one pass.
Does redaction remove metadata too?
No, that is a separate concern. Author names, software and timestamps live in metadata; use the Metadata or Sanitize tool to clear them.
