Marking up a PDF usually means hoping the other person's reader shows your comments the same way yours does — and it often does not, because annotations are a layer that every viewer draws differently, and some print them and some do not. This tool takes the opposite approach: highlights, freehand pen strokes, notes, rectangles, ellipses and arrows are drawn into the page itself, so what you see is what everyone sees, in every reader, on paper as well as on screen.

That certainty has a price and the tool states it. Once a mark is baked into the page it is part of the artwork: it cannot be moved, edited or read back as a comment, and Export annotations will not find it, because there is no annotation object left to find. Use this when the marked-up copy is the deliverable. If the recipient needs to reply to your comments or tick them off, leave the file to a reader that writes real annotations.

How it works

  1. Drop in a PDF.
  2. Pick a tool: highlight, pen, note, rectangle, ellipse or arrow, and set colour and stroke width.
  3. Mark up the pages — undo, delete a selection or clear a page as you go.
  4. Download the annotated PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is opened by JavaScript and WebAssembly running inside your own browser tab. It is never uploaded, there is no server-side processing and nothing is stored — closing the tab discards everything.
Can I edit or remove my marks afterwards?
Not once the file is saved. The marks are drawn into the page, which is what makes them show up identically everywhere, and it also makes them permanent. Keep the original file if you might need a clean copy.
Why can Export annotations not read these back?
Because they are no longer annotations. Exporting reads comment objects attached to a page; baking draws pixels and vectors into the page itself. It is the same trade-off in both directions: universal display, or machine-readable comments.
Will my highlights print?
Yes, and reliably — that is the main practical reason to bake them. Reader-drawn annotations are often skipped by print dialogs or rendered differently by the printer driver.
Can I hide sensitive text with a black rectangle?
No — please do not. The rectangle sits on top and the text is still underneath, selectable and copyable. Use the Redact tool, which removes the content itself.
