A PDF's bookmarks are the outline in the sidebar — the thing that makes a 200-page document navigable instead of a wall of pages. Most files that need them do not have them, because the tool that produced them never wrote one. This editor lets you build that outline from nothing, or repair an existing one: rename entries, move them up and down, nest them under each other, and point them at a different page or at a web address.
One behaviour is worth knowing before you start deleting. Removing an entry keeps everything nested underneath it — the children move up a level rather than disappearing with the parent. That is almost always what you want when you are flattening an over-deep outline, and it is exactly what you do not expect if you assumed a delete takes the branch with it.
How it works
- Drop in a PDF, with or without existing bookmarks.
- Add entries, rename them, and set the page each one jumps to.
- Use nest and un-nest to build the hierarchy, and move entries up and down.
- Choose whether the panel opens automatically, then save.
What people use it for
- Giving a long scanned report the table of contents it never had.
- Fixing an outline that survived a merge but now points at the wrong pages.
- Flattening a machine-generated outline that nested five levels deep for no reason.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. The file is opened by JavaScript and WebAssembly running inside your own browser tab. It is never uploaded, there is no server-side processing and nothing is stored — closing the tab discards everything.
- What happens to the sub-entries when I delete a bookmark?
- They are kept and move up one level. Deleting a parent is a way to flatten a branch, not to remove it. If you want the whole branch gone, delete the children first.
- Can a bookmark point at a website?
- Yes. An entry can target a page in the document or a web address, which is useful for pointing at a source, a form or a repository from inside the outline itself.
- What does "open the panel on opening" do?
- It sets a flag in the document asking the reader to show the bookmarks sidebar when the file is opened. Most desktop readers honour it. It is worth turning on for a long reference document, where the outline is the point.
- Is this the same as the visible table of contents on page 2?
- No. That is printed page content. Bookmarks are structure — the sidebar outline a reader can click. A document can have either, both or neither, and this tool only edits the second.
