Every PDF carries a small record about itself: title, author, subject, keywords, the software that created it and the dates it was made and last changed. Readers show the title in the window bar instead of the filename, search engines and document management systems index the fields, and libraries and archives rely on them. Most files carry whatever the producing program guessed, which is often an author who left the company and a title like "Microsoft Word - untitled2".

The tool works in two steps on purpose: the first click loads what is actually in the file, so you edit the real values rather than overwriting them blind. There is also a clear-all option for when a document is about to leave the building and the metadata says more about your organisation than you want it to.

How it works

  1. Drop in a PDF and click once to load its current metadata.
  2. Edit the title, author, subject and keywords, separating keywords with commas.
  3. Or clear everything, if the document is going outside.
  4. Click again to save the updated PDF.

What people use it for

  • Giving a report a proper title so readers see it instead of a filename.
  • Correcting an author field that still names whoever set up the template.
  • Stripping internal metadata from a document before it is published.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is opened by JavaScript and WebAssembly running inside your own browser tab. It is never uploaded, there is no server-side processing and nothing is stored — closing the tab discards everything.
Why do I have to click twice?
The first click reads what is in the document and fills the fields, so you can see and edit the existing values. The second saves your changes. Without that first step you would be overwriting metadata you never saw.
Does clearing the metadata make the document anonymous?
No, and this matters. It clears the document information fields. Other traces can remain — XMP metadata, annotation authors, form field values, revision history. If the goal is to remove identifying data before publishing, use the Sanitize tool, which is built for that.
Why does the producer field still name some other software?
Creator and producer describe what made the file, and they are conventionally left as a record of its origin. You can clear them, but a document management system may find them useful.
Do the keywords help search engines?
Inside a PDF they mainly help document management systems and desktop search, which index those fields. Web search engines lean on the document's actual text far more than on its keyword field.
