A filled form is still a form: the values live in interactive fields that a reader can click into and change, and different software renders those fields differently — sometimes with a blue box around them, sometimes not at all. Flattening ends that. The fields are drawn permanently into the page as ordinary text, and what was a form becomes a document that reads the same everywhere and can no longer be edited.

It is the step to take when a form is finished and being sent on. There is an option to flatten annotations as well, which does the same for comments and stamps. If the file has no interactive fields at all, the tool tells you and rewrites it as it was rather than pretending to have done something.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is opened by JavaScript and WebAssembly running inside your own browser tab. It is never uploaded, there is no server-side processing and nothing is stored — closing the tab discards everything.
Can the values be edited afterwards?
No — that is the point. Once flattened, the text is part of the page and there are no fields left to click into. Keep the unflattened copy if you might need to change something.
It says no form fields were found.
The document has no interactive fields — it may look like a form while being an ordinary printed one. Nothing needed flattening, so the file was rewritten as it was. To write on a form like that, use Add text.
Some fields could not be flattened.
The tool reports how many and leaves those as they were rather than dropping their values. It happens with unusual field types and some digitally signed forms, where changing the page would break the signature.
Does flattening protect the document?
It stops casual editing of the field values, which is usually what people mean. It is not security: the page can still be altered by someone determined. For that, sign it or protect it with a password.
